On September 16, 1970 and with the purpose of establishing a policy of mutual aid and to avoid unfair competition among the companies that at that time were dedicated to the incipient activity of car rental, the ASOCIACIÓN COSTARRICENSE DE AUTO RENTISTAS was constituted.

From that moment on, the Association became the legitimate spokesperson of the common interests of the companies that in an organized manner were dedicated to this activity and became especially representative after July 5, 1985, date on which the Law of Incentives for Tourist Development was enacted.

This new legislation proposes an accelerated and rational process for the development of the Costa Rican Tourism Industry and recognizes within the activities entitled to benefits and incentives, the “Leasing of Vehicles to Foreign and National Tourists”.

With this new legal environment, ACAR further strengthens its goals, aims and objectives and undertakes important struggles to represent and defend the legitimate interests of its Members, as well as to promote that the provision of vehicle leasing carried out by its members, is carried out within strict frameworks of commercial ethical fairness.

At present, the Association gathers 15 of the most recognized car rental companies, with a solid organization that is recognized by the rest of the industry’s sectorial groups, some of which have ACAR representatives on their respective Boards of Directors.
