Safety protocols for car rental

Representatives from Sixt Rent a Car, Budget Rent a Car, Alamo-National-Enterprise Rent a Car, Toyota Rent a Car and Dollar Rent a Car met with members of the ICT (Costa Rican Tourism Institute) to establish safety protocols for the car rental industry in addition to the sanitary measures put in place by the Ministry of Health.

  • Maintain a distance of 1.8 meters between people during transactions
  • The number of customers in the office should be limited with social distancing maintained between waiting customers
  • Customers and staff must wear masks throughout the rental processes
  • Ensure that information on protocols is displayed publicly in the commonly used languages of staff and clients
  • Regular cleaning of shared spaces and objects such as telephones and computers with a 70% alcohol-based cleaning solution alcohol
  • Provide antibacterial soap, disposable paper towels and alcohol in gel of at least 60% for staff and clients
  • The customer’s driver’s license and credit or debit card should be placed on the desk and returned the same way.
  • Vehicle inspection forms and receipts should be sent electronically

For vehicle deliveries or returns outside of the office:

  • Inform the customer of the protocols prior to the delivery or return.
  • The agent should use appropriate PPE and take a disinfection kit including disposable towels, disinfectant and alcohol in gel.
  • The agent and customer should maintain a distance of 1.8 meters.
  • The customer should place their driving license and credit or debit card on the hood of the vehicle or other flat service. They should be returned the same way.
  • The car keys should be disinfected and left on the passenger seat of the vehicle
  • Once the transaction is complete, the new driver of the vehicle should disinfect the steering wheel, door handles and gear stick
  • The customer and agent should then disinfect their hands
  • Vehicle inspection forms and receipts should be sent electronically
